A delicious week it has been. A patient to take care of in hospital, lessons to attend to and tasks to be done and posted. My favourite saying, 'Never give up' became my guiding star once again.
Reading and reading and reading, I begin to create my Delicious site. I discover it really is delicious and can serve as a library for me. After creating my bookmarks and tagging them all I need to do is dive in and get just what I need for my students.
Looking at articles on oral skills, I arm myself with the notion that technology is the in thing for my slow learners and I can use resources that are available in my school. I plan for a radio lesson and it turns out to be interesting. We listen to a conversation on one of the FM stations and we then talk about stress and intonation.
I later dig into skill building websites with my students and an exercise on pronunciation in mind, I get just what I need. "Deborah Healey's Attic:12 Step Pronunciation" becomes my first stop. An eye opener for my students and I. We agree that these must be our rules and must be placed in a conspicuous place for all to read and internalize. After a discussion, I give out a group assignment on pronunciation to be done over this weekend and additional information be sought from the internet. I hope the findings will be interesting.
As the week closes I am rich with more knowledge not just for myself but to equip the young Kenyans with better skills.

Hi Mary !
ReplyDeleteI also had lots of fun creating my delicious page and adding links . I also talked to my students about it and they looked very interested in creating their own pages !
Best regards ,

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteI have also used Deborah Healey's Attic:12 Step Pronunciation with my forst year students this week and let me join you-it has worked very well for them as well.
One more thing I liked in this post by you is that you asked them to provide additional examples form the internet. This means that they will have to think independently...
Good luck!
